SE Wellness joins project to enhance substance abuse prevention efforts on campus

February 6, 2023

Southeastern Oklahoma State University Student Wellness Services is working with higher education institutions to promote the improvement of substance abuse prevention efforts within the campus communities.

The project is part of an endeavor of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS), which is funded by a federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

SE joins the project, already underway for the current grant cycle, to provide a Higher Education Prevention Services outreach on the campus. Through a grant that is managed by ODMHSAS, Southeastern  will now provide services for opioids, and/or stimulant misuse, and access to suicide prevention education.  Funding for this project is renewable each year for three years, beginning in July.

“This program will provide some much-needed guidance and education on the misuse of opioid and stimulant medications,’’ said Tiffany Tate, SE prevention specialist.  “I look forward to working with the campus community and beyond to spread the word of this wonderful opportunity presented by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.”

SE Student Wellness is reviewing assessment materials to identify the most current needs for the campus and the campus community will receive educational and outreach services tailored to its specific needs.  Already underway this spring and as part of MLK Week of Service events, a focus group was held with staff and students on substance misuse and abuse prevention education on campus and within the community. Future similar events and educational posts to help explore substance abuse and suicide prevention and outreach will be ongoing.

Events and educational posts to help promote substance abuse and suicide prevention outreach, will be posted on SE social media.
