September 5, 2024

The theatre department of Southeastern Oklahoma State University will offer its first production of the Fall 2024 semester – “Silent Sky” by Laura Gunderson – from September 26-28. This captivating show delves into the life and achievements of pioneering astronomer Henrietta Leavitt.

Performances will be at 7 p.m. each night in Montgomery Auditorium and admission is $10 per ticket. Tickets will be available at the door or via pre-sale at www.SE.edu/VPAC or by calling (580) 745-2696.

“Silent Sky” is a beautifully crafted narrative that brings to light the story of Henrietta Leavitt, a brilliant yet often overlooked scientist whose work with variable stars led to the discovery of the universe’s expanding nature. Despite the societal constraints of her time, Leavitt’s groundbreaking research paved the way for future astronomical discoveries and earned her a posthumous place among the greats of science.

This show highlights the intersection of science, gender, and perseverance through a compelling and heartfelt portrayal. With a sharp wit and deep emotional resonance, Gunderson’s writing celebrates Leavitt’s contributions while also addressing the broader themes of recognition and equality in science.

Director Riley Risso Coker and a talented ensemble of Theatre at Southeastern actors will bring this inspiring story to life, promising an engaging and thought-provoking theatrical experience.

The production will feature senior Kelly Smith as Henrietta Leavitt, junior Audrey Dorn as Margaret Leavitt, freshman Jonas Broselow as Peter Shaw, junior Michelle Camp as Williamina Fleming and freshman Emma Zamborsky as Annie Cannon.

Theatre at Southeastern is dedicated to producing high-quality theater that engages, entertains, and inspires audiences. With a commitment to showcasing diverse voices and stories, we strive to create performances that resonate with our community and celebrate the power of live theatre.
