- SE’s Green Eggs and Hamlet literary journal earns REALM Awards Superior rating
Green Eggs and Hamlet – the student literary journal at Southeastern Oklahoma State University – has been recognized with a Superior rating in the 2024 Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) Awards sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Green Eggs and Hamlet earns this Superior rating in its first-ever submission to the REALM Awards.
Transitions – the 2024 edition of Green Eggs and Hamlet – is the 29th edition of the journal and the second full publication since the COVID-19 pandemic forced a halt to production. Schools in 46 states and five countries nominated student magazines from across higher education, high schools, and middle school ranks for consideration in this year’s REALM Awards.
The REALM program publicly recognizes excellent literary magazines produced by students with the support of their teachers. REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing.
“It is a great honor to have the talents of Southeastern recognized as superior work, particularly in the first contest ever entered by the journal,” said Karen Maple, adviser of the journal, which is sponsored through the Southeastern Department of English, Humanities and Languages. “This says a lot about the talents of our students and alumni who submit their written and artistic works and the dedication of the students, staffs and editors of Green Eggs & Hamlet. Special recognition also belongs to Jack Ousey and the Visual Arts department for their talented works in cover and design.”
Student leadership of Transitions included editor in chief Hailie Pittman, assistant editor Kolton Moye, art liaison and layout assistant Hannah Peterson, secretary Bre Tamplen, summer editor Aubrie Solis, photo editor Lillie Hearon-Brewer, and layout assistant Susana Ros. The cover was designed by Gen Naraya.
Other student staff were literary staff Nicole Armstrong, Marshall Bruton, Kyle Copeland, Kara Hodo, Samari Holmes, Raynie McGinness, and Brooklyn Young, and musical staff Aline Alexander and Collin Bauswell.
