- SEsports claims Great American Conference title in Rocket League; D2 National Finals up next
SWOSU takes Overwatch championship, Adam Brown of SWOSU earns Super Smash Bros. singles title
Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s eSports teams – SEsports – hosted the Great American Conference Championships on Saturday, April 26, and kept the crown for Rocket League in the SEsports Arena in the Glen D. Johnson Student Union.
SEsports ran away with the title, coming in as the top seed and dropping only one game in three best-of-seven matches. SE swept Southern Arkansas in the quarterfinals and Northwestern Oklahoma State University in the semifinals, then rolled to a 4-1 win over Southern Nazarene in the championship match.
“I’m proud of our team for coming through with a win against tough competition in person, which is different than our normal online matches,” said coach and advisor Steven Harris. “We were thrilled to be selected as the host institution, and we hope all of the conference schools enjoyed their time in our facilities.”
SEsports’ Rocket League championship team consists of Carter “gamersity” Hancock, a junior from Tulsa, Dawson “DeeJay” Meador, a junior from Piedmont, and Christian “crimsonchin” Vining, a sophomore from Silo.
Up next for the Rocket League squad is the D2 National Final on Thursday, May 1, against the winner of a Tuesday semifinal between Daytona State and Indiana Tech. SEsports defeated Carthage College (4-1) and Grand Canyon University (4-3) in previous best-of-seven rounds. With a win, SEsports would need one win over the losers’ bracket champion in the double elimination format.
Southwestern Oklahoma State won the team championship in Overwatch, with a 4-2 victory in a best-of-seven match with SEsports. SWOSU’s Adam Brown won the championship in Super Smash Bros. singles with a comeback victory over Nicholas Howell of Arkansas Tech.
Teams representing 10 of the 12 GAC’s core member institutions participated in the event – Southeastern, Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, East Central, Harding, Northwestern Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Baptist, Southern Arkansas, Southern Nazarene, and Southwestern Oklahoma State.
