Exchange Partnerships

WINS Network Open Close

Starting in Fall 2023, Southeastern began partnering with Webster University (Webster Groves, MO) to offer an exciting new portfolio of study abroad programs for traditional, semester-long study abroad offerings. Southeastern students can choose from any of their WINS Network programs, including Geneva (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria), Athens (Greece) or Leiden (the Netherlands). They also operate a wide exchange network with other universities, which, with a little extra paperwork, are also available to Southeastern Students. They offer programs in Fall, Spring, and during two 4-week Summer terms. Check out their website of programs and their descriptions. Programs have their own dedicated housing, include a stipend to cover some of the cost of the flights, regularly host local and regional excursions, and help students take advantage of a truly global classroom. Interested students should contact the Office of Study Abroad, Dr. Lincoln (email Dr. Lincoln; studyabroad@se.edu) to learn more about these programs.

Federal Programs

The US Department of State, in conjunction with other offices, offers programs to help train a new generation of American global leaders. Programs train students in high-need foreign languages, engage in research exchanges, and provide for in-depth study at international universities of distinction. There are, here, three separate programs that are of particular interest for Southeastern students.

Critical Language Scholarships Open Close

The U.S. Department of State provides immersive language training (i.e. you go to the country to learn the language) in a variety of places around the globe that are considered vital to U.S. economic and diplomatic interests. These programs typically last 8 weeks over the summer, and include an orientation session in Washington, D.C. followed by travel abroad and intensive language school in your host country. The U.S. Department of State covers all costs of this program, which is competitive. You can find out more about this program here. You must be a currently enrolled student (graduate or undergraduate) at the time of application, but you may participate in the program the summer after you graduate. Applications for summer programs typically open in early September, and applications are due in early November for summer programs in the following year.

Boren Awards Open Close

Funded by the US Department of Defense as part of the Defense Language and National Security Education Office, the Boren Awards fund the intensive study of language and culture abroad by U.S. undergraduate or graduate students. All eligible applicants have the option to either apply for a Regional Flagship Language Initiative or select/design their own study program. Programs are usually summer-term or semester-based, with funding levels that vary. Languages can be hosted as part of one of several programs based at US Universities or international partners universities. Students have the option to design their own programs, choose from several special “flagship programs,” or work through regional language institutes in the cases of indigenous regional languages (e.g. the African Flagship Languages Initiative).

Fulbright Fellowships Open Close

Fulbright Student Program

Rising seniors, graduate students, and recent graduates are eligible to apply for a number of funded opportunities abroad through the Fulbright Student Program (this means that you are given money to go do these things). Applicants must be U.S. citizens, and need to have completed their bachelor’s degree before they begin participation in the program—although you are encouraged to apply during your senior year, for participation after graduation. Programs include research, study, and English language teaching in countries throughout the world. Please visit this website to learn more about the opportunities available.

The Brad Henry Fellowships

Brad Henry Fellowship Open Close

The purpose of the Brad Henry International Scholarship Program is to provide an opportunity to undergraduate students from Oklahoma regional universities to participate in a semester of study abroad at the University of Wales in Swansea (Swansea University). The scholarship may be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, room and board, books, materials, and travel expenses relating to the study abroad program. Southeastern is part of a rotating selection of schools in the Regional University System of Oklahoma that nominates a scholar for a term of study in the Spring semester (typically in odd-numbered years). The program is only open to Oklahoma residents who have earned more than 30 credit hours toward their degree and are enrolled full-time.
